Podgora is a picturesque coastal town nestled in the very heart of Dalmatia, known for its kilometres of beautiful pebble beaches, natural freshwater springs, and a centuries-old tradition of fishing and seafaring. What makes Podgora truly special is its unique contrast — on one side washed by the turquoise, crystal-clear Adriatic Sea, while on the other side rises the magnificent Biokovo mountain.
Located just 9 km from Makarska and approximately 60 km from Split, Podgora offers the ideal balance: a relaxed, authentic Dalmatian town atmosphere with all the comforts and activities of the wider Makarska Riviera within easy reach. The scenic waterfront promenade lined with pine trees, cafes and restaurants is the heart of local life.
The town's long tradition of hospitality and its natural setting make it one of the most beloved destinations on the Croatian coast — a place where the mountains meet the sea in perfect harmony.

Beaches
Podgora boasts some of the most beautiful pebble beaches on the Makarska Riviera. The long main beach stretches along the waterfront and is ideal for families with children, offering shallow entry and clean, safe swimming waters. Natural shade from centuries-old pine trees adds to the comfort.
Beyond the main beach, there are also quieter hidden coves for those seeking more privacy and tranquillity. The sea in Podgora is exceptionally clean and crystal clear, making it perfect for snorkelling and swimming.
The beach promenade is lined with cafes, restaurants and facilities, making it easy to combine a beach day with a pleasant walk, refreshment stop, or dinner as the sun goes down over the Adriatic.
Active holiday
Rising dramatically behind Podgora to a height of 1762 metres, the Biokovo massif is a stunning natural backdrop and a paradise for hikers, cyclists and nature lovers. The Biokovo Nature Park offers a network of marked hiking and mountain-biking trails through diverse habitats, from Mediterranean maquis to subalpine terrain.
The absolute highlight is the Skywalk Biokovo (Nebeska šetnica — the Heavenly Walkway) — a breathtaking glass-floored viewing platform extending out from the cliff face at 1228 metres altitude. The panoramic views from here extend across the entire Makarska Riviera, the offshore islands of Hvar, Brač and Korčula, and on clear days all the way to Italy. It is an unmissable experience for any visitor to the area.
The park entrance and Skywalk are accessible by car via a mountain road from Makarska. Allow a full day to explore the park properly.
Food & drink
Podgora and the wider Makarska Riviera are a delight for food lovers. Along the waterfront promenade and in the narrow streets of the town you will find authentic Dalmatian konobas (traditional taverns) and modern restaurants serving the freshest local seafood — grilled fish, octopus salad, black risotto with squid ink, and shellfish. Everything is complemented by local olive oil, home-grown vegetables, and excellent Dalmatian wines (try Plavac Mali from the Pelješac peninsula).
The local markets are also worth a visit for fresh fruit, vegetables, honey, lavender products and homemade rakija (brandy). Dalmatian hospitality is legendary — hosts love to share their produce with guests.
Day trips
Daily boat excursions depart from the local harbour to the islands of Hvar (famous for lavender, nightlife and historic town), Brač (home to the iconic Zlatni Rat golden beach), and Korčula (birthplace of Marco Polo). These are some of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean.
Makarska (9 km) offers a vibrant town centre, the famous 2 km main beach, shops, restaurants and nightlife. Nearby Omiš is a dramatic pirate town at the mouth of the Cetina canyon — ideal for rafting and adventure. Split and Dubrovnik are both reachable for cultural day trips.
